1967년에 발표되어 영국 프로그레시브 록 밴드 Procol Harum을 일약

세계적인 밴드로 만들어준 곡입니다.

 

그 노래 첫 번째로  Procol Harum이 부릅니다.

이 노래는 피아니스트 David Lanz에서부터 Annie Lennox, Joe Cocker,

그리고 최근의  Sarah Brightman에 이르기까지...

무려 300여 명의 가수들이 리메이크 곡을 낸 걸로도 유명하죠.

 

2004년 Rolling Stones 지에 의해 모든 시대를 통틀어

가장 위대한 500대 노래 중 57위,

영국 TV 방송국 Channel 4에 의해 

100대 싱글 곡 가운데 19위로 선정되기도한 노래입니다.

The crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder

As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
But the waiter brought a tray

And so it was later
As the miller told his tale
that her face at first just ghostly
turned a whiter shade of pale

She said there is no reason
And the truth is plain to see
But I wander through my playing cards
And would not let it be
one of the sixteen vestal virgins
who are leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well been closed

우리는 가볍게 판당고를 추면서
홀을 가로 질러 재주를 넘기도 했지
난 멀미가 날 것 같았지만
관중들은 더 하라고 떠들어 댔어
방안은 마치 천장이 날아갈 듯
더욱 웅성거리고 있었어
우리가 술을 더 시키자
웨이터가 쟁반을 가기고 왔어

그리고 얼마 후 술집 주인이
이야기를 늘어 놓자
그저 파리했던 그녀의 얼굴에
더욱 창백한 그림자가 드리워졌어
그녀는 아무 일도 아니라고 하면서
뻔히 알 수 있지 않냐고 했지
카드 게임을 하면서 난 궁금해 했어
나는 그녀가 해안을 향해 떠나는
열 여섯면의 성녀 중
한 사람이 되도록 둘 수는 없어
난 눈을 뜨고 있지만
차라리 눈을 감는게 낫겠어
